Vehicle Recall Index has no accounts, no forms that send data to this site and only cookieless, aggregate visit statistics. This policy describes what actually happens when you use it.
VINs you enter
The VIN check (length, characters, check digit, model-year code and manufacturer code) runs in your browser. The site's own server does not receive the VIN. The decoder keeps the VIN in the address after the “#” sign so you can bookmark or share a result; browsers do not send that part of an address to servers, but it stays in your browser history and in any link you share.
Requests your browser sends to NHTSA
- Full VIN decode: when you press “Get full details from NHTSA”, your browser sends the VIN to NHTSA's vPIC service at vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov.
- Recall lookup: your browser sends the chosen model year, make and model to api.nhtsa.gov. No VIN is sent.
Those requests go directly from your device to NHTSA, which receives your IP address and browser details as with any website visit. NHTSA's handling is described in NHTSA's privacy policy. The site sets a no-referrer policy so the page you were on is not passed along.
Hosting and server logs
Like any website, the hosting service processes connection data — IP address, time, requested address and browser information — to deliver and protect the site. The site's own code sets no cookies and does not use browser storage.
Advertising and measurement
To count visits, pages load Cloudflare Web Analytics, a cookieless measurement script from Cloudflare (static.cloudflareinsights.com). It reports aggregate data such as the page address, referrer, browser type, country and page load timing; it sets no cookies, uses no browser storage and does not track you across sites. It is not loaded on the VIN decoder page. See Cloudflare Web Analytics and Cloudflare's privacy policy.
This version shows no advertising. No AdSense code, tracking pixel, advertising cookie or remote font is requested. If advertising is enabled later, this section will first list the advertising partners, their cookies and your choices.
Children
The site is a general-audience reference and does not knowingly collect information from children.
